Taking care of your car: dealer down the road vs. maker + メンテナンスパック

So I got to talking about car maintenance with my in-laws. I explained to them that I did most of the work on my car myself (oil/filter, battery, spark plug) and took my car to the local dealer for shaken and the yearly inspection. They looked at me like I was some sort of alien. Especially at the age of my car – almost 10 years with 110,000 kms. And they insisted I go to the nearest Nissan dealer ASAP and sign up for the メンテナンスパック.

I guess at this point, the extra money spent can help prolong the life of the car. What’s everyone’s take on this? How do people in here look after their cars?

  1. If you know what you’re doing for the basics, and are getting your inspections done correctly, why would you need to pay extra for the dealer?

Most people just don’t understand their own vehicles.

  2. What awful advice. Dealers in Japan tend to charge way more then regular mechanics, and they try to bill you for just about everything. My local dealer メンテナンスパック basically is just oil/filter change, shaken, and checkup twice a year but any actual repairs cost money…

You’re doing it the right way especially for a used vehicle. Most people in big cities in Japan are just too lazy, dont have the space, or are clueless how to do the basic things themselves ie shaken or change oil etc.
