Netflix with subs?

After some time my Netflix automatically switched to the Japanese-hosted version, and even though my Netflix is still operating in English, trailers will still provide English subs – quite often when I view a Japanese show (with English subs in the trailer) there will be only selections for Japanese subs.

Does anyone know a fix for this? or a suggestion of Japanese content with English subs on Netflix? (Preferably dramas not animes. )

  1. Netflix is pretty good with subtitles on their own produced and owned stuff. Then you’ll probably get all the languages under the sun. But if it’s not their own content you probably have more limited language choices. Us silly gaijin in Japan don’t move the needle far enough for all of these streaming providers to spend more money on rights to get additional language subs or dubs beyond Japanese.

  2. I recommend using a vpn for Netflix. I’m here on a trip to the Philippines and found many jp drama and anime with English subs.

    Netflix japan is terrible.

  3. Download “Language Reactor” its an extension that will at the very least, let you machine translate automatically the subtitles in Japanese when they appear.

You can also use it to learn Japanese, since it allows you to check each word/kanji by just clicking the word.

  4. This is normal. Most trailers have full English’s, the actual shows don’t. Netflix trolls for some reason. And lets not get started on the shows that have random episodes subtitled as if that is of use to anyone.

  5. I absolutely hate this, was going to watch Inuyasha cause the preview had eng subs, but when I went to watch it, only Japanese! Same thing with One Piece. Japan Netflix has subs up to like season 2 or 3, but only Japanese after that. Meanwhile Netflix US has eng subs for the entire series. The inconsistencies between Netflix services in different countries is annoying af
