こんにちは
Recently got access to a Genki 1 text book and noticed something strange about the chapters. They have chapters 1-12. Than another set of 12 chapters (numbered 1-12) with the first 2 being Hiragana and Katakana. I am somewhat familiar with the 2 but could use a refresher.

Should I start with the second set of chapters than go to the first set, start with the hiragana and katakana chapters than go back to beginning, or just go in chronological order?

1. do chapter 1 including exercises, vocab, grammar, etc
2. do the back of the book part of chapter 1 which has more exercises, readings, etc
3. do chapter 2….
also starting chapter 3, kanji are in that back part
do the lesson first (read through the dialogue) then look at the grammar breakdown, memorize the chapter’s vocabulary, then do the exercises. do the chapters in order 1 2 3
I think the introduction to the book explains it, but they’re both chapter 1. One is vocab/grammar/exercises with some classroom exercises and the second section in the back is mostly reading/writing exercises as well as being where they start giving you kanji you should learn.
In my opinion, you should do both front & back sections before moving on.

Almost all the exercises are there except the classroom pair ones, and gives you a variety of ways to do it (multiple choice, fill in the blank, writing, etc) which I find to be a lot quicker to practice than writing by hand. I usually read the chapter, then go through the exercises twice. Once in multiple choice as “easy” mode to help me internalize the grammar points, then once with freeform answering as “hard” mode to see if I can produce. Seems to be working well so far.
