How do I sign up for Pairs as a foreigner?

I’ve recently moved to Japan, I speak pretty good Japanese, so I am trying to sign up for pairs but my verification keeps getting denied. Am I doing something wrong?

Can I use my passport from my home country or 在留 card? I don’t see 在留 card as an option though. Any help would be appreciated, thanks. Just seems like every method I’ve tried gets denied.

  1. Just an FYI, Pairs is free to sign up, but guys can’t interact with anyone and it’s expensive.

Bumble on the other hand is free and, as far as I know, requires no verification.

  2. I’m pretty sure I used my health insurance card, but it might have been my driver’s license. Dating apps generally accept health insurance cards as ID, because everyone has one.

  3. I used my health insurance card! You can’t use a 在留カード. I met my fiancé on pairs. It was a really good experience in case anyone is thinking about trying it. I only went on three dates, but all of the guys were very polite and put together.

That said…if you’re struggling with the rather clear directions for signing up you might struggle to make any meaningful connections. I would venture to say almost everyone on there is “I want to get married in the near future” serious. That requires a very high level of communication ability. It’s not like bumble or tindr. My fiancé has said I was the only remotely foreign looking woman he saw on there and I’m mixed. I also didn’t come across any foreigners at all in my swiping.

  4. Another Japanese dating app is With.is – it’s the biggest one after pairs and I found it easy to use. You need to speak Japanese for sure but wasn’t hard to get verified.

  5. Japanese dating apps suck imo. They are all heavily skewed towards women( like guys have to pay) and also towards marriage. I dont really get it. HelloTalk is a better casual dating app than most Japanese dating apps lol. That said bumble and tinder etc are cesspools in Japan
