Experience with Seishun 18

Hello fellow travellers!

I am planning a 9-day trip at the end of August and I was wondering if anyone has had experience with the Seishun 18 train travel pass. I am on a tight budget, so the ¥12,050 fare seems very appealing. In comparison, the Japan Train Pass is around ¥30100

I would divide my stay in 4 days spent in Tokyo and 5 days travelling around, so the duration of the pass (5 days) is perfect.

How much is it to travel with normal trains compared to the shinkansen if I want to travel extensively?

Would it be possible to go down to Kyushu and return with this ticket?

Thank you in advance.

Yes, but, it took the more than a day to travel from Tokyo to Kyushu. If you leave on 5:20am from Tokyo station, then at most you will reach Shin-Yamaguchi at 12am. (Yes, that’s 18 hour on train, with multiple connections). Then it’s a few more hour the next day to reach Kyushu.

Whether that’s worth the time is up to you.

For practical usage of Seishun 18, it’s probably for day trips around Tokyo where there are rapid trains.

  2. Consider this – Kokura (first major station on Kyushu) is about 9 hours from Okayama, which is 12 hours from Tokyo.

Going to Kyushu and back would take most of four days without ability to stop in more than one place for more than 3-4 hours in any of those days.

  3. Honestly, going from Tokyo to Kyushu is almost always cheaper flying than taking a train. And obviously shorter.
