Good place for a few days at the beach in Okinawa?

My wife needs a few days away warm, beach, relax time etc. She mentioned Okinawa and I’d like to take her and the kids for an extended weekend.

I’ve never been there and don’t know much about the place so am looking for recommendations:

Do you know a nice place close to the beach and easy to get to/from the airport that wouldn’t break the bank but would be a good place to recharge for a couple of days?

  1. Generally if you’re going to the main island most beaches near the airport are either crowded or expensive or both.

    I’ve been to Oki a few times and my personal favorite beach was Oodomari beach. Absolutely beautiful, pretty cheap, there wasn’t a ton of people and there’s a lot of cool fish you can see while swimming since it’s near a reef.

    Problem is it’s about an hour and thirty minute drive from the airport and not very accessible with public transport unless you take a taxi?

    Otherwise you’ll probably want to go more towards Nago or Onna village as they tend to be accessible by bus.

    I also highly recommend Ishigakijima or Kumejima if you’re strictly looking for beach stuff as the main island is more suited for beach stuff + doing a lot of touristy stuff like drinking/shopping etc. Depending on the season there may be direct flights from Tokyo to both islands.

  3. If you’re planning to swim in the waters, remember that Okinawa has a lot of jellyfish and poisonous sea snakes. Beaches connected to hotels usually have nets around them, but if you go to other wild beaches, you won’t have protection so just keep an eye out.

    I don’t know what you consider breaking the bank, but I had a great relaxing time on the main island at the Hyatt Serigaki island hotel

  5. Went to Ishigaki last moth and loved it. Quite cheap all around, direct flight from KIX, still have travel subsidies (or did), and everything we ate was wonderfully delicious.

  6. Ikei island has a hotel and a nice beach for the kids. About an hour from the airport. Car rentals are cheap in Okinawa so definitely worth considering.
