Extending Visa and Resident Taxes

So this is a little bit of a bit annoying if a situation.

I moved from Kobe to Tokyo in 2022 February. I have to get my visa extended in a few weeks. My problem is, I’m not sure if I filed my resident taxes correctly in 2022 for Kobe. Basically, I was a resident of Kobe until February when I moved and started working. When filing for 2022(since in 2021 I didn’t have an income as a student, and 2022 I didnt have one until moving to Tokyo), I filed as no income for the kobe resident taxes. Is that correct? Did I have to report my income in Tokyo to Kobe?

Basically timeline:

2020-student no income, kobe

2021-student no income, kobe

2022-No Income in Kobe, February moved to Tokyo and started making money (taxes handled by company).

A bit in a panic mode and not sure what exactly to do right now. I do have my taxes filed at my company for 2022 but nothing deducted for resident taxes (except this month to my current ward which makes sense).

Also while I am here, am I allowed to go in and submit my visa extension application and wait to resolve this situation?

  1. 2022 resident tax billing won’t start until June 2023. And the billing municipality will be the municipality you reside in as of January 1st 2023, which in your case is Tokyo.

So because you state you had no income 2021 then you’ve not missed any resident tax payments yet

  2. Your residence taxes for 2022 income will be assessed and due starting from June 2023, so Tokyo will take care of all of it when it’s time. Anyway, if you have properly filled out all moving out forms in kobe and moving in in Tokyo, they will know where to reach you if needed.

You can go renew your visa anyway. That system is more or less independent of taxes and you almost certainly don’t owe anything yet regardless.
