Currently in Japan on a working (researcher) visa, and I am planning to switch another job not related to research. Does anyone have any insight into the process? Is it simple? Will I have to be re-sponsored again? Do I notify immigration? Or can I simply just change jobs without letting immigration know? Links to any related resources would be helpful.

You have to [apply for a change of status](https://www.isa.go.jp/en/applications/procedures/16-2.html) to the status type that will cover the new job.
If your new job does not fall under the researcher visa, then you need to change it by applying for a change of status. Your new company needs to compile part of the form. It usually takes 3-4 weeks, may be longer if the immigration office is a busy one.
