Immigration Processing Time Update

Tokyo – Shinagawa

Pr Application Processing – **They are currently Working on applications from August of 2022.**

I asked the following question to the officer: My visa expires in mid-April, should I wait to renew my existing visa? I am worried my current 3 year visa will expire before the PR processing is done.

Answer: Not yet, wait til the end of the month/beginning of March you should have a response.

If you get nervous in March, send in the renewal notice to get the automatic 2 month extension. It will definitely be processed by then.

Note:

1. I’m doing spousal->PR so my confidence level is high, as it’s generally the easiest route. (Edit: Applied in August 2022)

2. We had to call continuously for 45 minutes to get through.

3. I wish this info was all online.

4. The man was extremely nice, knowledgeable, professional and reassuring. I was a little shocked.

5. I’m breaking a 1 month social media absence to post this update so I won’t be able to respond for 2ish weeks to any questions.

  1. Since you’re on a spousal visa, I would get the new visa first, then submit the application for PR with the new visa in hand. I doubt you for whatever reason would get a 1 year. But it puts you in a more secured position of you get rejected.

  2. Man that’s a big backlog. They used to process PR applications in 4 months during covid. They are busy with the borders opened up now.

I applied in November. Hopefully it’s processed in another month or two.

  3. I was also worried about my work visa expiring before I got PR (I applied in July 2022, old work visa expired in December 2022), so I ended up submitting the work visa extension paperwork in October to be safe. After I got the postcard saying to pick up my new work visa, I got another postcard the next day saying that my PR visa was ready!

Don’t give up hope! I’m sure that you’ll get your PR notification soon!

  4. I’m did my application in October. Seems like still 2 months to wait for me then :'( Crossing finger, thanks for the info

  5. I submitted my application in November, and they told me to expect processing time of 6 months. They sent me a letter in January asking for additional documents, so I guess the six months restarts from now… 💀

Incidentally, the request for docs included the direct number to the person processing my application, and he picked up immediately both times I called him with questions, and was very kind and helpful. Kind of pleasantly shocking.

  6. Thanks for the update. Still waiting for a reply on my application from late June (spouse to PR) in Yokohama. Called yesterday and they said they have all the info they need so I just need to wait ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
