Kagoshima vs Matsuyama

Hi, my husband and I are finally headed off to Japan later this year. Our itinerary is pretty much done but we have 4 days to play with in either Matsuyama or Kagoshima.

We’ll be at Osaka and have looked at flights to both Matsuyama and Kagoshima and they’re pretty similar in fare so it’s not narrowed it down too much.

We really love the idea of both places and are looking for advice to sway us one way or the other from people who’ve been before!

  1. I’m biased cause ive only been to Kagoshima but it’s pretty cool, especially with the volcano and if you have time to kill, absolutely make a visit to Yakushima, one of the most otherworldly places in Japan.

  2. Another vote for Kagoshima (+ Yakushima if you can spend at least 1 full day+night there):

    * Unreal food between Satsuma cuisine + kurobuta pork (best in japan imo)
    * My favorite garden in Japan — there’s garden in the castle grounds, built into the mountainside overlooking the volcano, it’s sooo beautiful
    * Hike the volcano obviously
    * Easy day trips to Kumamoto or Fukuoka (would recommend stopping in all three cities, they’re on the bullet train line that runs straight from Osaka, much more pleasant than flying and I despise Osaka’s airport with all my heart)

    Any reason why you’re interested in Matsuyama? It’s a bland city aside from the castle, in my experience (and Himeji castle >>>> Matsuyama)
