What kind of contract do I need to continue staying on my humanities visa?

Hello, I’ve been living in Japan for 6 years now, working at the same company since the beginning as a 正社員.

Now I’m about to quit and move to a different prefecture but my company still wants to do business with me (remotely). However it might not be full time as a 正社員 but part time as a 契約社員 or maybe something like 業務委託.
My company is looking to let me quit my job as a 正社員 and get my 退職金 and then hire me again with a new contract, but they’re still deciding on the hours and salary.

Now I’m wondering, will my humanities visa allow me to work anything less than full time as long as I make a certain amount in salary each month? Or do I have to be a 正社員/契約社員 that works full time?
Honestly I’ve tried looking at a lot of different websites but it doesn’t really specific if you are required to work 40 hours a week to maintain the visa or if you are just required to make a certain salary to maintain the visa.

By the way, the type of work will not change, just the hours and the salary, so I’m thinking I can still continue living here with my humanities visa (which is still valid until 2027).

Any advice will be highly appreciated!

  1. You could have a fixed term contract… however I’ve been told by some HR that the govt looks poorly at companies that transition employees from full time to fixed term, because they worry that companies force employees into such switch.

If you want to go b2b you have to register as sole proprietor or freelancer.

  2. You could contact the foreign residents support center and ask them. I’m sure they’d be more reliable.
