A school I’m applying for wants a recent photograph included in the application.
At first blush this seems like a casual photograph will do. However, a quick Google search gave conflicting answers.
Should this be a casual photo or a more professional one?

It’s a job application, take a professional one.
Go to a photo booth and get a photo that’s for 履歴書. If you’re a man, wear a jacket and necktie and a white shirt; if you’re a woman, a jacket and a white blouse. You really can’t go too formal, but you can go too informal easily.
I always use one of the apps and take a selfie in a suit then print it at a conbini.
Definitely don’t use a casual photo.
A photo of yourself will need to be a professional one, especially if you are applying for a school in Japan or any conservative Japanese company. Be neutral and no need to smile too much. Wear a matching black suit.
Our company’s HR guy just showed us some examples of what NOT to send… and told us these were the SFW photos.
If you can’t use a photo booth, wear biz attire from the waist up. Find as plain a background as you can and do your best to take a selfie in a passport/driver’s license style. No filters.
