So, I’m planning to visit family in the US in a few months. I plan to stay just over a week. I’m under treatment for cancer so my immune system is compromised. I’ve had one mild bout of COVID a few months ago. My worry is that I get sick in the states and need emergency care or hospital stay. I can’t afford to go bankrupt just to see mom. What choices do I have as far as emergency medical insurance while I’m in the states?

Guessing, but anything connectable/relatable to (in any way resulting from) your treatment, coverage would probably get declined. You may be able to buy the insurance, but if it was much of a claim, they might investigate, classify it as pre-existing, and not pay. Sorry, but a compromised immune system would make it easy for them to say no.
We just went thru this–wife and I. I got a heart valve replaced a few years ago now, and still take a blood thinner. She wanted me to get insurance for a week-long trip, but the list of confounding conditions was too long/confusing. We visited a doctor friend, who said they would not cover me for heart related problems because of this.
So we leave on saturday, wife has travel insurance and I don’t.
For a week-long trip, I’d say cross your fingers and go.
Every time I travel back stateside, or anywhere, I go with World Nomads:

I have severe asthma and I get a travel insurance plan through AIG that covers pre existing conditions. It’s a bit expensive but definitely cheaper than a hospital visit. I can’t remember the name of the plan though.
Check if your credit card gives you coverage.
