Switching to nuro from docomo Hikari

So, this is my first time switching internet providers in my 10+ years in Japan so I apologize if this is a silly question. I made a new post so that future people can search for it easily.

I saw other posts about nuro and decided to take them up on their one year for ¥980 a month as well as free construction and offer to pay cancelation fees. My docomo contract is up next year but if nuro pays for cancellation, then I’m solid.

So my question is, when do I cancel docomo? I don’t want to be without internet and the docomo site mentions the new Hikari service will cancel for me? I have a docomo router so I’m assuming I get nuro installed and *then* contact docomo to cancel.

I’m assuming I’d have to call asahinet as well? Thanks in advance!

  1. Just did this last year. Keep your docomo Hikari line until the Nuro line is pulled in and the router is set up. Once the Nuro line is live inside your apartment, you can call docomo to cancel the old contract. They’ll send you an envelope to return the modem.

  2. Just to make sure you’re not internet-less you may need to accept you might overlap the contracts for a month or so.

  3. Just make sure they’re really offering you to pay for all cancellation fees, including fiber pulling etc…

  4. On a related but different topic, has Japanese ability been required thus far? I can get by a lot of online things with translate, but not yet conversational.
