Tokyo – Hakone Itinerary Check February

Hello Everyone

My girlfriend and I will be traveling to Japan in the next few days and wanted to see what people thought of the below itinerary. We have never been to Japan and packed it full of things to do and see and wanted to know if it was possible to fit it all in. Thank you for your insights!

Tokyo, Japan (February 21st-28th)

Los Angeles (LAX) to Tokyo (Haneda Airport – HND): 2/21 @ 12:15am

Day 0 – 2/21 – Flight
Day 1 – 2/22 (Wednesday) – Arrive in Tokyo, Haneda Airport

1. Get on JR Chuo line in Shinjuku (JR line will need to transfer at the Takao station, stay on JR line)
2. Get off on Otsuki Station. Take Fujikyu railway
3. Get off on Shimoshida station. Walk 10-15 mins to temple
– The Hakone Open-Air Museum
– Hakone Shrine – Kanagawa – opens 8:30AM
– Try volcano eggs
– Check into Yama No Chaya @ 5:00PM (print receipt)
– Must take either cab or bus to location

Day 7 – 2/28 – Flight Home
– Check out of Yama No Chaya by 10AM
– Odawara Castle
– Train to Haneda Airport

Day 6 – unless I’m missing something, I can’t see how it would be possible to go to Fujiyoshida, Chureito Pagoda and Arakura Sengen Shrine, on the same day as Hakone, as these places are over 3 hours apart by public transport. Just getting from Tokyo to Hakone alone takes nearly 3 hours, plus extra time to go up and down the Ropeway to Owakudani, if you’re wanting to try the volcano eggs too. If you’re doing half board at your ryokan they usually have set dinner times, so you’d be at risk of missing this too by trying to do so much in one day.

    ETA: similarly on Day 5 – exploring Kamakura can easily take up a whole day, so I think you’d struggle to fit this and hit up all the main attractions in Yokohama in one day.
