I checked and the items sold for 3000 yen less on average withing a span of a few months and the ones for sale are currently more. Is it considered bad to price heavily under current asking to match previous sold items or should I be aming for a middle ground?

You price it so it sells..
There is no etiquette, if you are cheaper someone buys yours.
There’s no etiquette, only supply and demand.

Depends on how long ago those sold items were actually sold. Maybe demand was higher/lower 6 months ago or something.
Surely you want to price it as high as possible within the limits of what you think people are willing to pay.
Plus, if you list it too cheap someone is just going to buy it from you and immediately re-list it on Mercari for a higher price. It’s probably going to sell at “that” price either way so you may as well be the one to get the cash not someone else.
If you need cash ASAP then go ahead but otherwise you’re the only one that loses out in that transaction.
For true mercari etiquette don’t forget to block anyone who asks even for a small discount.
I just price higher because I know they gonna come asking for discount, but if they don’t, it’s a bonus for me.
