Question about SIM cards and frequency bands

Hello! I have an upcoming trip, and I’m a bit worried about SIM cards. Everywhere else I’ve traveled I’ve done the SIM thing, but in researching Japan it looks like my device (OnePlus 3) and my wife’s (Google Pixel 6) which we bought in Canada, may not have great cell frequency coverage on Japanese carriers?

So I was wondering if any of you had experience with devices which had similarly bad coverage and how it went for you. Having slow internet all of the time would be OK, but having fast internet some of the time and zero internet some of the time would be awful. I had that in Ireland once years back and it nearly ruined the trip being in and out of signal, and having no internet when I needed it most.

I’d like to avoid pocket wifi if I can, since it’s just another device to carry around and charge, and I may want a Japanese phone number to call a business or something. But I’d much rather pocket wifi than a useless SIM!

Thanks!

  1. While I haven’t been to Japan with my Pixel 6, I did go with my Pixel 2 XL and Pixel 4 XL. No issues getting reasonable service everywhere I was in Tokyo and Kansai.

That being said, I was using my Google Fi worldwide coverage, not a separate sim card.

  2. I used a Google pixel 3 (Canadian) in japan in 2019 and there were no issues.

I am not sure about the One Plus 3… But for your wife’s pixel 6 look at e-sims. Might be easier than swapping a physical sim in / out. Ubigi is one that I have seen various times on this sub.

I will be in japan late next week with Ubigi e-sim. DM me if you have any questions about coverage and issues.

  3. Hey, not super helpful as I’m not from North America, but from NZ – we have weird frequencies that usually struggle.

Arrived last night and picked up a data only sim from Family Mart – works fast, good reception.

As long as your phone is unlocked should be sweet.
