Is it considered rude to learn Japanese just to read manga ?

I’ve seen some people in real life and some instagram pages talking about how they want to learn Japanese just to understand anime or read manga ? I don’t know why but I think that’s just kind of weird. But again if it’s a common thing then that’s fine I guess….

  1. If someone told me, “I’m learning English because I love to read American comics” I’d be like, “Awesome!”

  2. I mean.. thats why im learning lmao! Maybe ill go to japan one day too.. the more i learn the more interested i am to go… but yea it started just as wanting another language and i figured i liked anime and manga so i might as well learn japanese because it will be easy for me to practice with the mediums i already enjoy…

  3. Do what you love. I personally love manga, I read it for about an hour a day and it has really improved my Japanese. I would totally take the JLPT N1 but I’m just too lazy and love manga too much. I reccomend the app Shonen Jump+, you can read a lot of manga for free like Chainsawman! Good luck <3

  4. I learned english as a kid because I kept singing Hannah Montana music. It doesn’t matter.

  5. My impression from talking to various Japanese Italki tutors is that it’s probably a majority of Japanese learners that are coming from anime/manga Fandom…otaku culture is huge worldwide. More often than not they are surprised when I say I’m learning to *speak* Japanese and hadn’t ever read a manga until I did it for comprehensible input nor had ever watched anime. IMO it doesn’t matter what anyone’s motivation is nor is any motivation really “weird”, just maybe not related to my interests.

  6. nothing wrong with it. but i would say to keep an open mind- your motivations might change or expand as you learn!

  7. Oh, yeah, totally. Random pop quizes in life to check if you can read manga, so no trying to hide it.

  8. nothing wrong with that. and motivations change over time. it’s ok to start there, where you end up will likely be completely different.

also, even if that’s what someone says, it’s more likely that they have more than just that one motivation, whether they realize it or not. they just aren’t vocalizing all their motivations.
