Do I need to pay missed pension from university to get PR or nationality?

Hi everyone! I’ve been living in Japan for 10 years and working for 4 years, paying all my taxes and pensions. I heard that paying the pension that I missed while in university can improve my chances of getting permanent residency or nationality. Do I need to pay the missed pension, or are my current contributions enough?

  1. A lot of the documentation that they want to see involves demonstrating that you made payments on things for the most recent 5 years.

I can’t quite tell whether you actually missed any pension. Are you saying that you were living in Japan during university and didn’t pay pension?

  2. It doesn’t “improve” your chances. It’s a requirement. If you had an exemption, that’s different.

  3. My friend had the same issue with you when applying for PR. After discussing with immigration, they advised that he should pay back as much as he can. Pension do have limited period that you could pay back so the immigration also advised to attach a reason letter for the one that he couldn’t pay back.

So yeah I suggest you pay back whatever you could. It’s not an exemption techically btw, but rather a deferred payment system for students. If you do miss the payment window it will show on your record as unpayed (未納) forever.
