    A farewell ceremony has already been held for his next of kin. A farewell party will be held at a later date.
    Mr. Leiji Matsumoto is known for his hit movies such as “Otoko Oidon”, “Space Battleship Yamato”, “Space Pirate Captain Harlock”, and “Planet Robot Danguard A”.
    According to a source, Matsumoto “reportedly collapsed in Turin, Italy, where he visited in November 2019 to commemorate the TV broadcast of “Space Pirate Captain Harlock,” but has recovered since his return. He fell ill some time ago (detailed timing not disclosed) and was hospitalized due to his age”.

    Born on January 25, 1938 in Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture.
    She began drawing pictures at the age of 6, and at the age of 9, she started drawing manga after a fateful encounter with a book (“Shin Takara-jima” and “~~Tsuki Sekai Shinshi~~The moony man,” both authored by Osamu Tezuka).
    At the age of 15, his contribution “The Adventure of the Honey Bee” was published in “Manga Shonen” (Manga Shonen) as an award-winning work, which marked his debut in a commercial magazine.
    His real debut as a cartoonist was “Kuroi Hanabira” (Black Petals) published in “Shojo” in 1957. For a while, he continued to write for girls’ manga magazines.
    In the 1968’s, when the youth manga magazines began to emerge, he published “Sexaroid” in “Manga Goraku”.
    Since then, he has been writing more and more for seinen manga magazines and has been active in the shonen and seinen manga genres.
    His representative works include “Otoko Oidon,” “Gun Frontier,” “Space Battleship Yamato,” “Queen Emeraldus,” “The Cockpit Series,” “Space Pirate Captain Harlock,” “The Galaxy Express 999,” and “Shin Taketori Monogatari 1000 Nenjo-ou(~~Queen for 1000 Years~~ Queen Millennia).

  2. Weird. I was just randomly remembering the JLPT N2 test I took years ago which contained a short essay written by him in the reading section and this news came up.

    You know you’re old when your idols and heroes start passing away. I will always thank you for Galaxy Express 999, Matsumoto sensei. RIP.

  4. I was just explaining to my wife about him and the Daft Punk videos! I love his work, especially Captain Harlock. RIP to a legend.

  5. Wife met him maybe 15 years ago and got him to sign her Galaxy Express 999 comic. She came home higher than a kite talking about how wonderful he was. Needless to say, we’re bummed by the news.
