Hello r/movingtojapan,
I have some questions/would just like some general advice about what it’s like to live in Nagoya.
I’m currently applying for a job as a researcher in a university (JSPS Postdoc Fellowship which affords a salary of Â¥362,000/month).
I was just wondering what the quality of life for those who are living in Nagoya on similar salaries is like. The fellowship is exempt from tax, so I think my take home would be that amount each month.
Outside of standard bills (rent & utilities, food, travel to get to work), do you have much left over to go sight-seeing in nearby towns/take the train somewhere? How about going out for dinner with friends? I am just trying to figure out if I would be able to actually live rather than scrape by.
I know this query has a lot of variables that might make it difficult to answer, but I’m just looking for an average. My aim would be living maybe 20 minutes away from work in very standard accommodation for 1 person, going out on a Friday/Saturday night for a meal with friends and living a pretty standard life otherwise. Do you think that salary is sufficient to enjoy living in Nagoya and think I would be able to afford to explore other parts of Japan?
Any info would be greatly appreciated, especially from JSPS fellowship holders.
