Major cons of JPDB?

Are there any major JPDB cons I should be aware of?

The main ones i found was being online only, closed source and lack of customizability. Is there any more?

  1. It’s not a knock on their method or anything, but considering how just about all the media I want to consume isn’t on their database, I’d rather not be tethered, so I just use Anki.

  2. Overall I like it and am using it, but it does have issues.

Since it’s mostly machine-curated there are cases where readings in example sentences are not right, or when there are multiple dictionary entries the wrong one has been chosen. The way it relies on the dictionary seems like it could be problematic for words with many meanings or with meanings depending on kanji choice but I haven’t run into that myself yet.

Basically I’d plan to bring my own examples to it.

If you do that I like the content based deck construction and the SRS scheduling feels a bit better than Anki.

  3. I feel like it really lacks flexibility. I choose Anki for its massive flexibility. I can make cards for grammar as I like them or can make kanji cards, etc. It might be worth it if they had more VNs to choose from, but their selection is meh.
