Japanese culture

I’m writing a story about someone who was born and raised in Japan and moved to America (New York specifically) and in it they get homesick, so the person they’re dating (American) learns Japanese, about Japanese culture, and brings parts of it into their everyday lives

I’m American and I have no cultural connections to Japan, so I don’t know much more than what I’ve seen in anime, watched in videos, or learned online, and I’m also not sure how much of that is accurate.

What are some parts of Japanese culture that are such a huge thing that it would feel strange to be without it, esp if it isn’t common in America? I mean stuff like holidays and traditions and things that are just a part of everyday life

  1. Why not write about something you’re more familiar with instead of trying to represent a culture you admit that you have no connection to?

  2. Assuming you have creative control in writing this, you might have more success flipping the story around. I.e. American in Japan

Actually, that might be even worse

  3. Seems bizarre you have no experience with Japan and it’s various cultures but are writing about. Write about New York.
