The thing is though, this vending machine is the one inside hotels. Even if there’s underage drinking, they don’t go out and trash the hotel, town, have a rowdy house party, whatever. If it was a big problem, for sure if the news got wind of it and it became a thing, they would pull them from every hotel in the country. Or just add the card system that’s already in place for cig vending machines in Japan.
Usually you need something called a Taspo (an IC ID card) to buy cigs or booze from vending machines but sometimes in onsen or ski resorts you get a free for all one like this
I remember watching a sit com with my mom and her friends daughter visiting from college. She stayed with us in the summers, so she wouldn’t have to travel back to Japan. I saw the beer vending machine, and asked if kids use them. My mother said jo, but the friend said she and her friends used them from age 15. They never got drunk or rowdy, or so she said.
Remember seeing those and porn magazine machines near our base at Mt.Fuji.
I love this though
you can easily buy alcohol in convenience stores and they never ask for ID.
smoking and drinking culture is way different compared to america.
