Hello! I am possibly moving to Hamamatsu for a job, I’d love to know if anyone lives there currently and what it’s like! Things to do, how the public transport is, etc!
You should probably be more specific if you want meaningful answers.
Hamamatsu is the biggest city in that part of Shizuoka. It has a fairly nice-sized train station with department store for shopping. There is a Costco in the city. It has a happening enough downtown area for eating/karaoke/entertainment.
It has some pretty cool festivals – the biggest one being the kite festival. There are some nearby festivals in Kosai/Fukuroi too that are fun. You can enjoy the mountains, the oceans, rivers, and lake. There is a fairly large-sized lake that connects to the sea. Every year there is clam digging, fishing, fireworks, and water sports there.
It’s about 2 hours driving from Mt. Fuji in one direction and Nagoya in another. From Nagoya it is easy to use Chubu airport to travel.
To get around Hamamatsu without a car it’s pretty accessible by bike. But there’s a nice bus system, and there’s also the Entestsu, a local train that goes down the middle of it.
The castle park is one of the biggest draws to Hamamatsu. It was one of the places affiliated with Tokugawa Ieyasu – who happens to be the local mascot. Hamamatsu was also home to Ii Naotora, a female daimyo/warrior from the Warring States period.
There’s always something to do in or around Hamamatsu if you like activites. There’s the Flower Park, fruit picking, Unagi Pie Factory, hiking, cycling, surfing and so on. There is a local University you might be able to involve yourself with too.
That’s the gist – I enjoyed it for several years. If you have any specific questions let me know!
