Can I have two addresses?

Hello, I have a main account but I don’t want to use that to ask these questions.

I am in the middle of separating (not legally) from my spouse. I have my name on our lease but I am moving out, can I get another apartment rental without cancelling the other one?

Also my spouse said their lover is moving into the building but their name is not on the lease. I know it’s illegal for them to live there but who would know? What are the consequences for that.. does anyone know?

Thank you.

  1. I would remove your name from the place you’re moving out from. If your spouse’s BF/GF wants to ruin the place you’re still liable for damage.

  2. You may rent any number of separate apartments. However, you can only have one official address that you register with the government.

Also, if your spouse and his/her lover continue to live in the apartment you have signed a lease for, it is strictly illegal and almost certainly a breach of contract.

In Japan, the owner’s approval is required before a person who has rented a property can further rent it to another person. In other words, if you do not have the approval, it is illegal. It is a “breach of contract committed by you” because the normal contract contains an item that explicitly forbids it.

If the owner finds out about it, penalty fee and other charges will accrue against you, not your spouse.

  3. You can of course get another rental, no problem there at all. Agree with others, no upside to having your name on the lease. Tell your landlord or rental agency rep that you’re moving out. Pretty sure that having someone not on the lease live there is at least very much frowned upon, if not illegal.

  4. You can get a few million in the divorce if you can show adultery. Speak to a lawyer. About all of it.

  5. You can have multiple private rentals, but only one official address in the city hall. I don’t know what is your visa situation, but you might want to think this through before changing anything. If you are not on a PR it will be hard for you to renew your visa, and even if you do, don’t expect more than 1 year.

If you move out, but don’t change your address you will be fine, visa wise.

  6. Is the plan to separate but stay married for visa purposes? If so, just remember that living together is a condition of a spousal visa so you will likely not be able to renew.

    Get PR ASAP
