The other day I went to Mizuho to get cash with my MasterCard and the ATM just proceeded to spit it back out. The same happened when I went to a smaller chain who’s name I forgot. I checked with my card provider and they assured me it’s not locked.
I did take out cash before , I don’t understand what is going on. Am I going to a wrong ATM?
I’m getting really worried about it as there’s no other way to get my money.

mizuho *bank*? with your international ATM card? Yeah that’s not going to work.
Go to Japan Post atm, 7/11, familymart, or lawson. Those will most likely work. Domestic bank ATMs are only going to accept that banks’ cards and nothing else.
So to add to what the other person said. There are bank ATMs that accept Visa/MasterCard, even foreign ones. But they will explicitly say so, having a sign with the Visa/MasterCard logos.
Pull cash out from a 7/11 ATM. Works a treat.
I use my 2 international credit & debit cards all the time at restaurants and for groceries. I’ve only had it happen once where both cards were declined. I have no idea why, and they both started working again the following day. So I keep 10,000 yen on me when I go out just to be sure. It was a little embarrassing to have the store staff tell me both cards were declined.
Are you from the UK? Yeah coming from there to Japan is a complete clownfest when it comes to financial services lol. Everything you took for granted in the UK will become apparent.
In Japan ATMs only really service the bank it says on the top and they tend to charge still LOL.
If you have an international card you need to find a machine that is a “jack of all trades”. Usually in a convenience store. 7-11 has the best service in Japan imo. For mastercard there will be no surchages unlike a VISA, so keep that in mind too.
