Help switching from hiragana to katakana

I’ve been doing duolingo for almost a month now, and it’s been going great! However I’ve run into a problem, after getting the hang of hiragana it now wants me to learn some katakana. The problem being that my phones key board ( a Samsung) is stuck in hiragana and I can’t find a way to switch it.

Has anyone ran into a problem like this and can offer some advice on how to move forward.

  1. Depending on your keyboard…you may get suggestions in katakana as well…they sre usually after the suggested hiragana…cant verify since I have an ios device…but every keyboard I’ve worked with does provide suggestions when you type it…usually hiragana suggestions show up first, then katakana..some keyboards like the one im currently using has a button to switch suggestions from hiragana to katakana…if you are using a kana keyboard and it has that button, it probably will only change the suggestions, not the kana on the keyboard itself…if you are using a romaji keyboard, just type like you normally would and look for the katakana options…select options after each word you type

  2. Generally it will have the option in the autocorrect, no? I’m on iOS though so I’m not sure how it works on android, but if I type it out in hiragana there will be a katakana option in autocorrect.

Also I would recommend using the flick kana keyboard if there is an option for it. It helps you learn the kana much faster.

  3. ハイ write out the word in hiragana and the katakana version should be in the autocorrect list. Click the “…” for more options. It is kind of annoying that you can’t just write in katakana (as far as I know)

  4. Use Google Keyboard. Provides handwriting option as well that will help you with stroke order and stuff. Also, you can freely draw anything you want, including symbols, kanji, hiragana and katakana.
