Hello all!
My boyfriend and I (both early 20s) will be in Japan for the first time from May 26 to June 10th.
So far we have this as our location itinerary!
May 27- Tokyo- first day- explore city
May 28- Tokyo- shopping/temples
May 29- Tokyo- possibly museum
May 30- Kyoto- explore
May 31- Kyoto- temples and explore
June 1- Kyoto- archery experience
June 2- Nara- giant buddha and explore
June 3- Osaka- Osaka castle park and explore
June 4- Osaka- possibly Aquarium
June 5- Osaka- unsure
June 6- Osaka/ Kansai Prefecture- just explore
June 7- Nagoya- science museum
June 8- Nagoya- shopping
June 9- Tokyo- unsure
June 10- Tokyo- last day
We are stuck on ideas of what to do in Tokyo that are fun but not super touristy (we will be doing a few things like temples, ramen, sushi). We both really like art, anime, and museums!
We are also having trouble finding hotels and things to do in Kyoto and Osaka, and were wondering on any recommendations. We are open to Ryokan, Japanese style etc. but trying to stay under $300 total.
Thank you in advance for any and all help!

Have you looked at Team Labs in Tokyo? It’s an awesome extremely immersive art(?) exhibition which I’d really recommend.
Can’t say too much about Osaka as I only spent 2 days there but the Umeda Sky building is also a good shout if you like stuff like that. And the Don Quijote stores are something else!
Kyoto you’ve got Arashiyama (bamboo forest, Tenryu Ji Temple, monkey park, really picturesque,) 1k Tori Gates at Fushimi Inari, Kinkaku Ji golden temple, Gion, and Nara park isn’t far at all. There are tonnes more shrines to see.
Tokyo I mainly wandered round in awe and destroyed my wallet in Harajuku although I did go to Team Labs and the Ghibli museum. I wish I’d gone to the Gundam in Yokohama too. I found in Tokyo I felt a lot more chilled and comfortable, and enjoyed just existing there rather than sightseeing every day if that makes sense!
Obviously I’ve pointed out the really touristy areas so if you’re wanting to stay away from that maybe someone else can help more.
Also shouts to Karaksa hotel (Osaka,) Yamada and Kadensho Ryokan (Kyoto) and Hotel Niwa (Tokyo.) Stayed at all of these, all good locations and can’t fault them at all. Kadensho is a pricey one though.
Have an awesome trip! I’m properly jealous ha
