How do I increase my Anki retention rate?

My mature card retention rate has been steadily dropping over the past 6 months, and it recently dipped below 80% (currently at 79.74%). I know the solution is to change the interval modifier, but I’m a little worried I’ll mess something up. Any advice on how much I should modify it to get my retention rate back up to around 85%? The interval modifier is currently at 1.91 and the starting ease is 1.31. Thanks!

  1. In general: [https://docs.ankiweb.net/deck-options.html?highlight=log#interval-modifier](https://docs.ankiweb.net/deck-options.html?highlight=log#interval-modifier)

So, multiply your current interval modifier by log(0.85) / log(0.7974), which is 0.72 –> new interval modifier: 1.38

Personal opinion: Don’t. Unless you are studying for an exam, a retention between 70-80% is perfectly fine once you are past the initial high frequency beginner words. Anki shows you words just when you are likely to start forgetting them. Your actual retention between reviews is higher than your retention at the time of the review.

Edit: Also, your interval modifier (191%) and starting ease (131%) are not randomly chosen. They are the Refold “[Low-key Anki](https://refold.la/roadmap/stage-1/a/anki-setup)” settings which have the purpose of disabling ease factors. If you change them to anything else they will no longer have that effect. So you should not touch them unless it is really what you want.
