Use of 間 in the past

Hi! I don’t understand the usage of 間 when talking about the past. For example:

昨日は、**家にいる間**、ずっとテレビを見ていました。

why do we write 家に**いる**間 and not 家に**いた**間 since we watched TV during the time we **were** at home?

  1. Yes, but Japanese sometimes will rely on the final verb to determine the overall tense when there’s a state of being.
