(Re?) Starting designer & vintage retail business – online, brick & mortar

US citizen, thinking about applying for PR and moving to Tokyo (eligible and have documentation ready). Self employed and would be either opening a branch or completely relaunching my online store in Japan (client base is international but mostly US), would love to try out brick and mortar retail (pop up or semi permanent) in Tokyo as well. Decades of fashion/garment industry experience, such a rough work environment (talk about black kigyo ugh) so not thinking about going the corporate route again especially in Tokyo. Anyone here have experience with retail in Japan? or lmk if I should be posting on another thread!

  1. Forgot to mention, haven’t taken JLPT but based on practice tests I’m probably N2, been speaking conversational Japanese for about 25 years and studying business Japanese for the last year.

  2. >thinking about applying for PR

That is not even ***REMOTELY*** how it works.

You don’t just “Apply for PR”. You have to live here for a certain period of time, meet the qualifications, and *then* apply.

    >eligible and have documentation ready

Eligible *for what*? Have the documentation ready *for what*?

    > Self employed

    There’s no visa for that.

    >would be either opening a branch or completely relaunching my online store in Japan

It’s not as simple as just “Open a store”. You need to do some research about the Business Manager visa and what is required to get one.

    >(client base is international but mostly US)

Spoiler Alert: Selling non-Japanese stuff to non-Japanese people is not going to get you a visa.

Again: Not how it works. You can’t just come here and open a store.
