Question about first annual health check

Hi everyone, I recently joined a Japanese company and learned about the mandatory annual health check. I usually organize my own physicals, so it’s a bit new to me.

I’ve read that patients can opt-out or refuse certain specific exams in the health check without violating the law and getting your employer fined the 500,000 yen. Does anyone know which exams you’re allowed to opt-out of, and which are mandatory?

Thank you!

  1. The basic health check includes a chest x-ray, an EKG (heart rhythm check), height/weight, and basic blood tests (cbc/metabolic panel). Then you talk to a doctor for a minute or two about any concerns you may have and you’re done. It’s a great way to get a free physical. I don’t know why anyone would opt out of it? It’s a really good way to catch some common problems early too.

  2. Is it really legally mandated? I’ve never heard that before.

I have heard of requirements for getting x-rayed for TB. But that’s it.

I think your work would know better about this than anyone here.
