I can’t find this anywhere but what if someone is Japanese by blood but their parents weren’t born in Japan can that child still become a Japanese citizen without living in Japan for 5 years?

I’m just wondering what would the process would be? Like many Japanese immigrants who moved to Hawaii 1900s but now their descendants want to gain citizenship in Japan?

  1. There are visa for people with Japanese descent.

I’m not sure if they can become citizens earlier, but they have a fast track to become Permanent Residents.

  2. The place of birth is not important.

What is important is that at the time of birth at least one of the parents was a citizen of Japan and the birth was recorded on the family registry within 3 months of birth.

If you miss that 3 month window you’re pretty much SOL, although the child or grandchild of a Japanese citizen still has a pretty easy path to residency if they wanted.
