I teach at an eikaiwa, and today one of my students, who is an older woman gave me a very thoughtful gift for my birthday. She had a candlemaker browse my Instagram and create a candle made of flowers to represent me. Absolutely melted my heart. I know her birthday is coming up because everyone’s birthday is written on the front of their file, and I’d like to repay the favor as she often gives me other gifts too.
Her gift was so thoughtful that I can’t just pluck something off a shelf and call it a day. Can anyone guide me to some good gift ideas for a sweet older lady? Preferably a cool personalized gift?

Since the humid, gross summer is here, and since Covid protocols mean no dryers in bathrooms, perhaps a monogrammed handkerchief/towel? All the ladies in Japan carry them.
What are her interests, likes?
I seen beautiful exquisite sunbrellas on Amazonjp
You could buy a rock tumbler and make a necklace or bracelet with whatever cool rock you get out of it.
You could make dry flowers and then frame them with a kit they sell on Amazon.
You could make a handmade book marker.
You could also look up handmade gifts on Pinterest .
If you don’t have the time to do all that, Amazon sells some interesting things.
You could learn crochet and make her something personalized, based on her interests. Also, looking for an artist to make her tarot cards would also be interesting.
How could we possibly tell you a good personalized gift for someone? You know her infinitely better than we do.
Engravings on any everyday use items. For example, I once received chopsticks with my name on it. Quite nice.
Honestly I wouldn’t get her anything if she’s your eikaiwa student. For a multitude of reasons
How about go to a local pottery and buy her a hand made coffee mug? And get a 100-200 gram bag of fresh roasted coffee. Wrap it in a single nice white box. Maybe stuff the inside with red tissue paper.
Engraved tumbler. Give your feelings words, then have it set in…well, its not stone but you know.
