Study Advice

So I just finished up learning katakana and hiragana. I’m at a point where I can now read (albeit slowly) some words and phrases.

At this point, should I now jump in to learn kanji or would it be more beneficial to focus on my H/K reading ability excluding kanji for now and grow my vocabulary?

Thanks for the advice, this sub has been very helpful and motivating!

  1. Search Tadoku on this sub to get tons of reading pages for free, and Id recommend checking out TheMoeWay on google 🙂

  2. How are you learning grammar? You can’t read much without it.

If you learn grammar through the Genki textbook, it will give you reading practice so you can get used to your kana, vocab, and eventually kanji starting with chapter 3 onwards.

That’s how I did it and from there was able to jump into reading books (with great difficulty).

If you wanna do some other method, there are suggestions on the sidebar. Most of them will give you sufficient practice with reading kana.

  3. i’d say improve on your reading ability/vocab a bit, but do try to start learning kanji soon
