Last week, a person living in my sharehouse was caught smoking inside of the shower. In response to this, my sharehouse company installed a security camera right at the entrance door to the shower area. It films everyone going in and out of the shower room. They did this without asking us beforehand. Is it legal to do so? Smoking is against the rules in my house but I don’t know what they expect to catch on the camera as it does not show what people do inside the shower, like the person who smoked. Thanks in advance

I think that’s fine.
First, the announcement alone is already sending a message for potential offenders: “Do this again and you may get caught.”
Think that in order to smoke unnoticed, the offender must perfectly conceal the cigarette pack in his way in and way out, and also if there’s a smoke detector alarm, they can bracket the time of the alarm to narrow down the suspect.
Second, smoking is only one of the potential offense that can happen in the shower you know.
I’ve heard many cases (not limited to JP) in share houses, where sexual harassment cases such as peeping toms occurred in the shower area. And there are also cases where people clogged the shower with… You know, shit and stuff. Horror stories… The cameras will help to deter at least partially, the potential offenders who are still afraid of consequences. The crazy ones will be crazy anyway, well…
In fact, the cameras may not be monitored at all, or even recording anything over a few hours. But the presence of a camera is already some sort of protection. In my opinion, it’s good that they are taking action at all.
Of course it’s legal. It’s not inside the shower. I’ve worked in share houses and they have all had cameras in the common areas and sometimes outside too. Also worked in capsule hotels and they have cameras in the common areas also used for the purpose to pinpoint who might have been the person to smoke in the shower or shit in the shower or bring back a girl to their bed or whatever.
