  1. I haven’t worked there for 12 years, but I wrote thier textbooks. What questions do you have?

  2. It’s been a hot minute but for the lesson notes, I think there were sections for new words/phrases/grammar functions that were addressed. You will also address things they did a good job at and what they could work on. Then we would always have a spot to personally address the client that they receive via email. You should touch on the pre-lesson talk and include 1 positive and one constructive note. You have to write it at their current ability. Something like this usually sufficed:

    Hi Taro,

It was a pleasure talking with you today. Thanks for telling me about your recent trip to Kyoto. The fall colors sound pretty!

Today our lesson talked about professional and relaxed phrases during business parties. Great job with the greetings, especially with “good evening” during the roleplay. Let’s work on our tone when using casual phrases. Remember it is okay to sound more happy when you’re having a fun conversation.

Have a good evening. See you soon!

  3. Hey, during note taking, i’d say it’s good to always write down the person’s mistake and then, your correction later. For example

    X : I played swimming.

    O : I went swimming.

Be sure to catch the mistakes the interviewer makes and write them down. Wait for the person to finish his/her sentence and then point out the mistake. Then, try to elicit or give your correction.

If it’s your first interview, they’re likely gonna ask you to explain some words as simply as you can, to a beginner. Best go with a synonym or if you decide to go with a phrase, try not to do it in more than four words.

When starting the lesson, have a bit of a chat with the person. Ask two or three follow up questions to get him talking. (That’s basically the goal anyway)
Do watch the videos about Gaba’s teaching methodology and get familiar with it. They will definitely quiz you a bit on that.

    Good luck.

  4. I’m a manager for a direct competitor. Try to make notes of vocabulary they might want to review later, key grammar structures and also mistakes they make.
You can even have them self correct or highlight the issues for bonus points.
Try not to overthink it, you’ll more than likely be fine. This post alone is more prep than most do beforehand.

  5. I’ve been thinking about your situation, OP. Have you considered applying to teaching posts in different countries? You said in previous posts that you are looking for a change of scenery and want to experience a new culture. I know that Japan is usually the dream but countries like Vietnam and Cambodia also have English teaching jobs and can be an enriching experience. Don’t focus on one country. I think, right now, the market is oversaturated – especially when applying from outside of Japan.

Good luck on your journey. I hope you find what you are looking for 🙂
