How do you improve Listening and grammar?

Hello everyone I’m having issues with listening. I plan on quitting English this month so maybe that might improve my listening? I’m not sure when I was living in Japan a couple months ago my listening was at its peak but now it’s not as good as it used to be which surprised me. How do you go about improving listening skills? What was the stuff that I watch I can’t put Japanese subtitles on, but some of the stuff I can. Does that actually help?

How do I improve grammar? In Japan, I learned grammar, naturally, for the most part, and whatever I learned in my class, because it was easy for me to apply in other areas. But now it’s kind of stagnant, how do you guys make sentence cards in Anki for that? How can I apply my grammar more? I am friends with some Japanese exchange students, but they mostly respond to me in English, even if I speak Japanese to them. With exceptions, of course.

PS I’m doing an independent study at my college, which is supposed to prepare you for N2 But like my professor is pretty hands off and is making us find stuff on our own, and even if I ask questions, she has no time to answer them.

  1. Reading more for grammar and vocab, listening more for listening. You’re kind of expected to put hundreds of hours into it before noticable improvement. Also, you’ll want to watch stuff without subs for the best listening practice. My listening was really bad until I stopped using subs and rolled with the punches. Your brain will eventually be able to keep up, especially if you read a lot for more vocabulary.

  2. Learn grammar through textbook lessons and exercises, or an equivalent like Bunpro.

Japanese audio/video with Japanese subtitles is a great way to train listening. But choose whatever medium makes it easiest for you to get hundreds of hours of exposure.
