Go for working holiday visa or wait and build up experience

Hi. I’m nearing the end of my bachelor’s in computer science and will be finished with it at the end of December. I’m also nearing the age limit for the working holiday visa. Will turn 30 in april next year. So if I want to use that visa I’ll need to go sometime next year. This would give me maybe one year to build up some real life working experience in the software field and save up some money.
The question though is if it is worth it trying to go for that visa or of it is better to work for maybe 2-3 years and then just go for a student visa and try to find a job that could convert that to a working visa? Anyone have any experience with either of these cases and could give their input on it?

I’ve lived in Japan before when I was a bit younger so I know that I like it there and I can speak casual Japanese, but not keigo, nor I’m I particularly good at reading or writing Japanese.

  1. The real question is what do you want to do after.

If you want to come and hang out in Japan for a year and then go home, working holiday (or doing an ALT/Eikaiwa stint) is a fine option.

If you’re looking for career though I’d say get two or three years of experience, skip the student step and just look for a job to bring you over directly.
