Shinjuku police stopping foreigners

I have just arrived in japan march 1
And got stopped twice march 2 walking around shinjuku twice.
First I stopped at a corner looking at google maps.
Second I was walking with my friend talking.

What is the reason for this? They asked for passports.

  1. Japanese police like flexing against foreigners. It’s a thing. It’s nothing particularly personal, they do it when bored.

  2. Just follow the law and carry your passport. It’s chill they look at it and off you go. Really doesn’t annoy me at all, they are just doing their jobs.

  3. I’ve lived here 4 years and haven’t been stopped once. Guess it’s just luck of the draw

  4. Really, I was there last week, and never happened to me.

Been around a lot in Shinjuku at night, game centers, bars, streets, etc.

    Maybe was just unlucky.
