What gifts do you get your coworkers when you’re leaving the company?

So Im set to leave the school Im currently teaching at before the end of March. As far as Im aware, it is traditional to get your fellow colleagues gifts of sort like sweets or whatever, but is there something that is considered standard in Japan? Maybe a brand?

There are at least a dozen teachers at my school, and a couple at another school I also teach at, therefore I don’t wanna go bankrupt.

Any recommendation?

  1. Whatever you can afford.

If that’s nothing, then don’t feel obligated to bring anything at all.

  2. Just a box of cakes or manju or something from the gift counter is fine.

  3. The good thing about being a foreigner is that you can feign ignorance of cultural practices that you don’t want to take part in.

  4. When I left my school I just bought a couple bags of individually packaged sweets like kit kats and those like mini tiramisu things, then bought some gift bags and note cards from daiso and put some sweets in a bag with a written note for each teacher. It’s way more personalized, and it cost less than Â¥1000 for 7 staff

  5. I give them the Irish farewell. My time teaching was awful and I strongly recommend against it to anyone who asks.

  6. By the front door, or walking the plank?

If it’s the former, and you’re hoping to exploit network connections in future, then something nice to eat to share.

If it’s the latter, fuck ‘em.
