searching for 35 mm film

Hello,

I am looking for 35 mm film (any brands really Kodak, Fujifilm, lomography …) but I can’t get my hands on it. In Osaka I went in a Bic and camera shop they all told me they were out of stock.

Anyone knows where I can find some in Osaka ? If not I will search in Tokyo or order online. Is the shortage concerning all Japan or can I still find some ?

Some similar post has been made but 7 months ago so I guess the situation has evolved.

Thanks for the help.

Affordable color film is over. Ilford films (including the new Acros) are still ¥1,000 a roll online. Personally, I gave up taking film a year ago when even expired film at auctions started reaching stupid prices.

  2. Wow, I just checked online, and the prices are downright comical at this point. Yodobashi has stock on their website, as does Amazon, but those prices. National Photo here in Tokyo is sold out of everything but Instax.

I was the last holdout of everyone I know – high volume film shooter for decades, had a home darkroom, and never owned a digicam until just before moving here last year. I saw the film prices and thought it might be time to give it a try, so I traded my film Leicas for digital ones. Still don’t love it, but am not willing to deal with film here, especially not at these extortionate prices.

  3. I find it hard to believe that it’s difficult to find.

Bic should do backorders or yodobashi?

Any FujiYa lab usually has some cheap film…

Kitamura probably has a branch in osaka try there as well

  4. Unfortunately it’s harder to find, and when you can find some the prices will be exorbitant. I have usually bought my film from either Yodobashi or Amazon, but haven’t gotten any new rolls in a year or two.

It really bums me out because I have a lovely collection of Nikon/Canon SLRs from different generations, not to mention my different point and shoots for street photography. I want to keep them, but I can’t afford the cost of film, let alone the shit processing fees for color. I’ve got plenty of darkroom experience, but it’s just not realistic to set up a lab in my apartment…

If it’s anything to ease the pain, I’ve started using older digital cameras. Definitely not the same, but they’re still fun to play with.

  5. Top cameras are still insanely expensive and the value is stable. Film is rocketing in price and presumably will continue to do so.

Is the price of cameras going to fall off a cliff in 20 years, or is a company like ilford going to invest heavily? When all the Japanese companies pack it in, they might be the main one left.

  6. Well quick update, just found a shop and paid 5000 ¥ for 3 rolls 🙃

  7. Bic and Yodobashi is a crapshoot, but if you can wait, you can always order it via their online shop and they’ll ship it the moment their stocks arrive.

Alternatively, Kitamura seems to reliably have stock from what another commenter has said.
