Is there such a thing as an ethical pet cafe?

I’ve been wanting to take my wife to a pet cafe, because the idea of it is pretty fun and we miss having pets, but I also don’t want to contribute to the awful living conditions most (all?) of them endure.

Do any of you happen to know any pet cafes in the greater Tokyo area that aren’t an existential nightmare for the animals involved? Is such a thing even possible?

  1. There are many cat cafes that serve as waiting areas for shelter cats in need of foster homes.

You can pick up some of them here.

Also, most cat cafes have an area where customers are not allowed, so cats that don’t want to see people can escape there at any time.

  2. By ethical you mean, conditions for the animals that are not abusive, right?

I think Cateriam in Shimokitazawa is adorable and a gentle experience for everyone involved. The cats can retreat in many different ways and the staff is experienced and always around to make sure everyone is stress-free.

Mimi Usagi in Ikebukuro is a petting-rich rabbit experience – they are careful with the exposure time, they separate the rabbits by age and so you can pet the elderly camly and then have the young ones run around you until you run out of the included food portion (they have also an otter section, but if you are against their approach regarding otter care, you dont have to participate and it is out of sight if you only go to the rabbits). It is my recommendation for wanting to pet something.

If you want something exotic (that to my amateur eyes looked legit), there is the snake center in Omotesando. You will be get a table pet snake and an picture opportunity with more exotic snakes. No furry friends though ^__^

  3. They are doing they best to save those pets . U can volunteer for free to help and give stuff btw. I always give money and my wife used to help every weekends

  4. First of all, thank you for trying to make well-informed, ethical choices 👏 I’d stay away from any and all cafes where the animals aren’t all rescues, as breeders are mostly bad business here and the animals are treated horribly. This includes cafes with non-fluffy animals too, like snakes and lizards.

I’ve been to two rescue cat cafes that are awesome and legit: Neu in Osaka (try their delicious animal-free food!) and Velcat in Yokohama.

  5. Look for rescue/shelter cafes. The larger ones might be open all week, while the smaller ones might only be open a few days a week. The cats should all be rescues, TNR さくら猫 etc.
I like Save Cat Cafe in Osaka near Ogimachi park.

  6. The ones I’ve been to are

    – shelter cat & VEGAN café “neu” in Osaka
    – Rescue Dog Cafe Tachikawa 保護犬カフェ立川店 (they have several branches)

Both are pet rescues and the dogs and cats are adoptable
