Best combination dictionary and flashcard app recommendations

I am looking for an app that is a Japanese/English dictionary and has a flashcard feature.

My go-to Japanese dictionary app is this one: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/japanese/id290664053

It’s so great, easy to use, and it allows you to save words in a list. It even has a flashcard feature. BUT the flash cards only go one way: English (front) -> Japanese (back). I’m looking for a way to also flip these around so Japanese is in the front and English on the back so I can study the flash cards both ways.

I have used anki, which is great, but I have to do a bit of leg work each time I want to make flash cards because I have to export my list then clean it up in excel then import into anki. I know anki has a bunch of premade flash cards but I am studying creating personal decks. I am reading and watching manga and anime and make a list for each book/episode and look up and save words in a list. Then I study and rewatch or reread it, study again, repeat. I typically do an episode or a chapter at a time so bringing things into anki each time feels too cumbersome.

Any recommendations?

  1. I can add you to the beta for my app, Manabi Reader /
Flashcards. I’m almost done rewriting it for 3.0 with macOS and iOS

  2. I really like Shirabe Jisho. Super easy searching – can type in romaji or kana, draw kanji, etc. Also has great entries for kanji as well as vocab words and you can create your own custom word sets/bookmarks. I haven’t totally used the flashcard function much but it seems like it has some great options, including just making a set automatically from the saved bookmarks. And it’s free!

  3. I use the same dictionary app! The flash cards do go both ways, you might have to change it from the flash card options. Click on the progress bar at the top of the screen to change the options.
