Tokyo vs Osaka

This question has been asked before but a lot of the posts are really old or relate to the poster’s specific situation too much to get the best general info from.

My company has satellite offices in both Osaka (Umeda) and Tokyo, meaning that I can work in either of these cities. I currently live in Tokyo and have been here for a couple years but I want to try out Osaka. I am a male in my early 30s

Does anyone have any comparison for these cities. The good and the bad

  1. You may also want to try asking in /r/Osaka.

  2. Osaka is:

    – Cheaper
    – Friendlier
    – Close to Kyoto if you’re into that
    – Has fewer visible foreigners (i.e. non-Asians)
    – Has a unique old-school atmosphere in places.

Personally I live in Osaka and love it.

  3. Well… have you ever visited Osaka? Why not come and stay for a few days, then you’ll have a better idea.

  4. I’ve found Osakaren louder and less “sophisticated” but also less reserved than their Tokyo counterparts

  5. Kansai has more mountains than Metro Tokyo, so you can enjoy cycling. There tend to be more traffic accidents, though.

On the people and cultural side, Kansai offers more variety than Tokyo. You can live in Osaka to save commute time, but you can also live in Kobe, Kyoto, or Nara. People in Kobe are rational and intelligent. People in Kyoto are… like British.
