Booking hotels/hostels for first Japan trip – Tokyo comparison

I’m booking up the hotels/hostels for my upcoming trip to Japan – the trip itself is impulsive as I suddenly had a block of time between work projects which in my field I rarely get, so I’m resigned to the fact that I may have to pay more due to short notice.

I’m starting with Tokyo and trying to get the best option for the kind of trip I want.

I’m a solo traveller mid 30s, first ever time in Japan, would like a social (or capsule hotel/hotel if reasonable) but not party hostel which is well connected enough that it wouldn’t be considered out of the way of main attractions. I have never stayed in a hostel/capsule hotel before however as a solo traveller I wanted to go out of my comfort zone and try it out as this trip is very much about trying out new experiences for me.

Based on reviews, I reserved **Toco Tokyo Heritage Hostel** as it looked a great place for an authentic old townhouse with a nice atmosphere & social bar – however on reflection I have been told that although well reviewed, it is slightly out of the way (being near Iriya train station)The price I was given was **£25.08 per night** for a bed in a dormitory .

I was also toying with going straight for the best reviewed capsule hotel I could find in the most recommended districts (either Shibuya or Shinjuku) and I ended up on **The Millennials Shibuya.** It seems to tick all of the boxes in terms of location and being a new experience of capsule hotels (and one of the better equipped ones) it seems to be a luxury version of the hostel/capsule hotel experience which would be great for me as I’m a bit cautious with this being my first time solo travelling without the typical hotel bookings, however I’m not sure if the high reviews are based on a much lower price point, as right now the price is **£94.75 per night.**

I’m willing to pay more if it is justified based on people’s experiences, however a lot of the posts I saw were people giving The Millennials a great review based on what looked like a much lower per night rate. If the hike in price (e.g. seasonal) makes it not worth it (or there are better options elsewhere which tick the boxes of central location and good for solo travellers) I’d be willing to listen to alternatives.**e.g. Unplan Shinjuku is £38.25 per night** for a bunk bed without possibly of free cancellation.

Any help appreciated

  1. That Toco place looks nice — I don’t think it’s too far out of the way. You’re near train stations, and being in a somewhat residential neighborhood isn’t the worst idea in the world. You’ll end up taking the train all over the city regardless. On my first trip I stayed slightly further northeast in that same general area, and it was nice to come home to a quieter part of town at night.

I’d try out a capsule hotel for a night, but you probably wouldn’t want to do it for longer than that. I stayed at [this place](http://www.booking.com/hotel/jp/capsule-anshin-oyado-akihabara.html) one time, which was also a more high-end capsule hotel, and it was great.
