I was wondering if anyone knows if its possible to take a semester off of language school while on a student visa and keep my visa? I paid for the whole year and just about to finish my first semester but am having some issues back home in the USA and wondering If anyone knows if its possible or not? Considering my options. Thank you. I am planning on asking my school tomorrow, but just curious anyone had idea.

No, you wouldn’t be able to keep your status of residence as a student. You would be required to [notify immigration](https://www.isa.go.jp/en/applications/procedures/nyuukokukanri10_00014.html) that you have left your school, and leave Japan within 14 days of the start date of your leave of absence. If you need to stay for longer than that, you must contact immigration and complete the procedure to change your SOR accordingly.
Before you return to continue your studies, you’ll need a new COE from your school, to get a new visa at that time.
