Wedding gift for old friend

I will be visiting Japan from the US for a Japanese friend’s wedding. He was an exchange student at my University in the US, 20 years ago. We have kept in contact, and visited each other over the years.

I have heard that it is customary to give ¥30,000 as a gift. (Or more) As someone who doesn’t live in Japan, how would you go about getting crisp new bills?

Also, any recommendations on how it should be wrapped?

Thank you in advance!

  1. Usually if you’re from abroad it’s not expected that you give the customary 30,000¥ BUT I’m sure he’d be super happy that you were thoughtful enough to adhere to the culture.

To get crisp bills go to any ATM, they are usually super nice when they come out as Japan recycles the money a lot.

For what to put it in: “shūgi-bukuro” and if someone asks for more details tell them “kekkon-shiki” (wedding)

You’re a dope friend! He also might just appreciate something from your country for him and his partner. If you’re wary about the cultural footfalls.
