English Private Tutor in Sapporo

Hello, I am being requested for teaching English to a 14 year old student in Sapporo. I have 5 years experience teaching in private schools and 6 years doing private classes one-on-one. Do you know what I should charge for an hour-long lesson?

  1. I usually charge 3000 if it’s at least 4 times a month. 3500 if it’s less than that.

  2. I adjust my charge based on level and type of lesson.

Assuming the student is at the expected level of their grade, I’d go for 3500y per hour if its general conversation practice and lesson. If it’s specific to test rep, I might stay at 3500 or go to 4000. I do also charge for transportation cost if it’s outside my commuter pass and if we have to meet in cafe for lesson, they need to buy my coffee.

If the student is below expected level, I tend to add an extra 500.

  3. It depends on what the content of the lesson is. How much prep is involved?

I’d wager 4500 + transportation + drink or such if need be.

You could probably bump that up a bit if you’re being asked, they’re searching you out specifically.

  4. Depends on your experience level and how much you want the job. I wouldn’t work for less than 8,000 yen an hour, 10,000 yen an hour plus expenses if it was off-site.

  5. Don’t charge too low. It is bad for the rest of us. 3000-4000 yen is a good amount for one to one lessons

  6. It looks like the going rate is 3000 yen an hour in Hokkaido according to various NETs I have spoken to.

3500 yen an hour if you’re experienced, and have a good reputation with a large client base that spreads the word about you.
